It compares feminist literature on the status of women in the 19th century and on female criminality with the depiction of womanhood in Margaret Atwood’s book. The following analysis is written from a feminist perspective. Her account provides the background, under which Grace Marks was judged by the people of her time and under which she has to be evaluated in order to understand the significance and meaning of her role in the novel. However, Atwood does not merely extrapolate the sociological and economic situation of women of that time. Margaret Atwood also provides a well-rounded picture of womanhood in urban British North America during the 19th century in Grace’s tale, in the letters of the fictional and historical characters, and in the historical documents.
